Thomas Brown |
Answer: Fixed fee per job Explanation: Most Handymen will charge a fixed rate based on the task. In my experience this is because of how hit or miss most residential homes are in terms of repair. Charging $30/hr to change out baseboards could be incredibly profitable, but only if the task is exceptionally difficult or uncharacteristically large. Charging $6 per lineral foot for basic MDF includes the cost of materials (pin nails/Brad nails, caulking, and baseboard), and the time it takes to measure, cut, and meticulously install. If the handyman is experienced, they might pull a piece of baseboard temporarily to see the condition of the wall behind it, understanding the conditions they're working with, and making reccomendations to the homeowner of what extra services might be required for the job to be done properly.
If the job requires tear-out and a dump run, that will usually be a seperate charge. Enough to cover the cost of dumping and the time to make the run. If the wall was installed too high and there's gaps, the handyman can reccomend a foam filler or insulation option to help seal the area. All of this can be factored into a higher price per linear foot, or a seperate package that includes time and materials. Charging for time might mean the worker slacks off to meet a certain number of hours, a fixed rate means the professional has motivation to get the job done efficiently. |

Answer: By the hour (plus material cost) Explanation: Flexibility of Services: Handymen typically handle a wide range of tasks, from minor repairs to more involved projects. Charging by the hour allows for flexibility in pricing, accommodating the varying scope and duration of different jobs.
Unpredictability of Tasks: Some jobs may present unexpected challenges or complications that are difficult to estimate in advance. Hourly billing allows handymen to be compensated fairly for their time, even if the job takes longer than anticipated.
Small Jobs: Many tasks handled by handymen are small or short-term, such as fixing a leaky faucet or hanging a shelf. Charging by the hour makes it practical to bill for these short-duration jobs without requiring a minimum fee or a flat rate for each task.
Customization: Hourly rates make it easier to adjust for unique customer needs or combine multiple small jobs in one visit. Customers can prioritize tasks based on the time available and their budget.
Transparency and Fairness: Charging by the hour provides clear and transparent pricing for both the handyman and the customer. It ensures the customer pays for the actual time spent on the job, rather than a potentially inflated flat rate. |

Answer: Fixed fee per job Explanation: I charge per job that will include material cost. Charging by the hour can lead to a higher cost if the installer takes his time to do the repair or install and that cost will be much higher when material still needs to be added. So I'm not a fan of hourly I charge a flat rate for the job including materiel and parts needed to complete the job. It avoids extended hours on job and over charged cost. |

Answer: Fixed fee per job Explanation: I like to estimate the project as a whole so there's no misunderstanding on hours some may feel are being extended. |
Alionce Handy Pros |
Answer: Not sure Explanation: Each company is different, as is each job. Water damage jobs can be harder to do a fixed price on because some damage can not be seen till you open the wall or floor. If you under bid you can make little or even come out of pocket. If you bid high you could lose the job or make out well. Bidding the job can be a gamble especially for new business just starting out. I like to offer both prices up front and explain the difference to the home owner and let them choose which is best for them. |
