 There are several things you should pay attention to when making the decision to hire a handyman for your home repair and maintencance needs:
-Make a list of what you need done before you contact a handyman. Be upfront with what your expectations are so the handyman can evaluate whether or not your expectations are within his capabilities.
- Get reliable local references. Most handymen rely on word-of-mouth to build their business. A handyman that’s worth hiring should be able to easily supply you with three good references.
- Make sure the handyman is licensed, bonded and insured. If a person injures themself in your home, you are liable and can easily be sued. It does happen! Be sure to avoid the un-licensed “Chuck-in-a-truck” handyman.
- Get two to three estimates. It’s not a good idea to choose the lowest bid. Afterall, you get what you pay for.
- Make sure you are aware of what you’re paying for – get a bid in writing and signed. Look to see if materials are included in the bid.
- Establish a schedule for the work to be done. Determine when the handyman will start and will most likely be finished. Once the project begins, hold him to the schedule you have both agreed on.
